Haiti's Tragedy Felt By Bay Area Seniors

$50,000 Raised by Seniors in Honor of Haitian Employees

In the wake of the earthquake in Haiti, many stories have emerged from the tragedy of loss and joy of recovery. Though separated by more than 3,300 miles, the Haitian employees of The Tamalpais have been deeply affected by the devastation and suffering in their country and its effect on their friends and family still there.

The 326 seniors living at The Tamalpais, a senior housing community located in Greenbrae, California, have formed lasting friendships with the Haitian staff, many of who have worked at The Tamalpais for years.

Robin Daly, a longtime resident of Marin County and four-year resident at the Tamalpais, started a campaign to raise money for the Red Cross in honor of The Tamalpais’ Haitian employees. NCPHS (Northern California Presbyterian Homes and Services), which operates seven senior housing communities in the Bay area and owns The Tamalpais, agreed to match each dollar collected. In a little more than a week, residents and staff of NCPHS raised more than $25,000—$50,000 after the match!

As Noble Hamilton, a resident for five years, said. “It doesn’t take long for us at The Tamalpais to recognize one of the hidden strengths of our community—our staff. Their many kindnesses, given with a smile, make us appreciate them every day.”

“It was just the right thing to do,” said Mrs. Daly. “We are all family and wanted to help our extended family in Haiti.”
